Finding a personal trainer is not so easy. Finding the right personal trainer for you is even harder. I think that’s one of the reasons a lot of people put it off. It’s understandable - London is a busy place, you probably have enough on your plate without having to researching personal trainers.

Unfortunately going to the gym is in an area where motivation is key, and any excuse not to go can be seized upon by your lazy twin self. Not having found a personal trainer is just as likely to stop you going to the gym as “I forgot my mini bottle of shampoo” or “my favourite gym socks are in the wash”.

Some people spend many years putting off going to a gym because they simply don’t know what to do when they get there and therefore find the whole thing intimidating.

Luckily, we know loads of good personal trainers, send us an email (hello at londonpersonaltrainer.me.uk) and we’ll take care of the rest.

What’s more sad?

- Someone who was once a fit healthy kid neglecting to look after themelves for years, allowing work pressures to take priority over their own physical well being and without even noticing it, sliding into a situation where their health begins to seriously affect their quality of life.

or

- Someone who has realised what is happening to them, has had a break through moment, put aside all their concerns and excuses for not doing something about it and actually turned up to a gym. Only to then spend an hour of their time doing things that are completely useless and won’t give them any benefits or results whatsoever.

I’d say it was the second one.

It breaks my heart everytime I see someone who is sufficiently motivated to turn up to a gym and who is clearly putting in a lot of effort but, for lack of a good personal trainer is not going to get any benefit from what they’re doing. Even though they have no particular plan or direction, they’ll keep pushing themselves to come, and while they still have faith, they’ll keep coming. But after a few weeks of doing the wrong thing, when they don’t notice any difference to their physique or how they feel or how they stand or their appetite, it’ll eventually become undeniable: They’re putting in all this effort but getting nothing back. At that stage even the most commited person will start to ask what’s the point and most will just give up, perhaps for another 10 years?

If that’s ever happened to you, or you think it might, then I strongly recommend getting a personal trainer.

The shocking truth is that it’s not just about how hard you try, it’s what you do. If you have specific goals, your personal trainer can tell you specifically what to do and what not to do to achieve them. A personal trainer can at the very least help you achieve what you want within the minimum amount of time and with the appropriate amount of effort (not too little but also not too much). And a personal trainer might even be the difference between you giving up completely and you pushing through the hard first few weeks to actually enjoying going to the gym (as most regular gym goers actually do, believe it or not!) .

If you’re a guy who wants bigger arms and does nothing but dumbell curls I’m talking to you! (hint: it’s your triceps that make up most of your arms, you can’t have big arms without big triceps).

If you’re a girl who wants to loose fat around your waist and is always doing situps I’m talking to you! (hint: you can’t target fat loss in a specific body area by excercising it, situps could even result in slightly bigger abdominal muscles which is probably the opposite of what you are looking for. And don’t go thinking hours on the treadmill is the best way to do it either).

Ideally, a gym should have friendly and knowledgeable staff who will advise and help people maximise their time there. Unfortunately it doesn’t happen much, and to be honest what you really need if you’re trying to get a technique right is some undivided one on one attention. Many gym staff probably don’t have the time.

What if you just don’t like gyms but you still want some excercise guidance? Plenty of personal trainers help clients in their clients’ homes or (weather permitting) outside in a park. With a good personal trainer you won’t need much equipment to get a very effective work out, and they’ll bring everything you need.

What if you already go to a gym regularly? firstly congratulations on getting over the first few weeks hurdle. For you a personal trainer will be an oportunity to learn more and to work out more effectively. Just about every personal trainer has their own unique way of looking at things and the more people you get information from the better. For the experienced gym goer getting stuck in a rutt is a common problem that can be overcome by getting a personal trainer and letting them introduce some variation to your usual routine.

Here’s another interesting point: Some people have had a bad experience with a personal trainer in the past. See more on this here.

So, do you need a personal trainer? Well you might not, but if you’re just starting out why waste time trying to figure it out for yourself? And if you’re already on your way to becoming a regular excerciser, why not let someone elses expertise add to your results and enjoyment, I can guarantee that you’ll learn something you didn’t know before.

All you need to do is send us an email and we can sort it all out for you.

Some people I’ve met in London have had a bad experience with a personal trainer in the past, perhaps arranged via their gym, and that has put them off PTs for good and possibly even off excercising for good.

When I say a bad experience it’s usually that they just didn’t really get along, couldn’t see the point of what they were being asked to do and didn’t see results quick enough. Sometimes it happens and it needs a monumental effort by the trainee not to give up at this stage. Sometimes the answer is simply to change to a different trainer.

Here at londonpersonaltrainer.me.uk that is never a problem. After you’ve done your initial sessions we’d love to hear your feedback and if you’re not totally happy you can swap to a different trainer without a problem, and no one will be offended.

So contact us here, you’ve got nothing to loose :)
